The quality of an AI photoshoot is decided before you upload anything. Not by the model, not by the settings, but by the photo you took on your phone that morning.

Sellers who get poor results almost always have the same cause: a rushed source photo. The good news is that the fixes are cheap, take minutes, and your existing phone is already good enough.

Your phone is not the problem

Any recent phone has enough resolution and enough dynamic range for this. Nobody has ever needed a better camera to make this work. What they needed was to steam the garment.

Spend nothing on equipment until you have fixed the five things below.

The five that actually matter

1. Flatten it. This is the big one. Fold lines and creases read as fabric structure, and the render treats them as real, coming back with shadows that make no sense on a worn garment. Steam or press before shooting. If you do one thing from this article, do this one.

2. Light it evenly. Diffused daylight near a window, or two soft lights at 45 degrees either side. Avoid direct flash, which blows out highlights and flattens texture, and avoid a single harsh overhead lamp, which throws a hard shadow across the piece.

3. Shoot square-on. Hold the phone parallel to the garment, not tilted. A tilted shot distorts the print repeat and the proportions, and the render reproduces the distortion faithfully. Standing directly over a flat-laid piece beats leaning over it from the side.

4. Fix white balance. Phones auto-correct aggressively, especially under mixed indoor light. Put a plain white sheet of paper in the first frame of a session and lock exposure and white balance against it. Colour accuracy is the most expensive thing to get wrong, because "not as pictured" returns cost you the sale and the rating.

5. Frame the whole garment with room to spare. Do not crop to the edges. Cropped hems, sleeves and borders cannot be reconstructed accurately, so leave margin.

Surface and background

Plain and non-reflective. A white or light grey sheet, a matte table, a clean floor. Avoid patterned bedsheets, wood grain with strong figure, and anything shiny that throws colour back into the fabric.

Contrast helps: a white kurta on a white sheet gives the background removal less to work with than the same kurta on light grey.

Garment-specific notes

Sarees. Photograph the body, pallu and blouse separately rather than as one folded pile. The pallu and blouse are usually hidden or ambiguous in a folded flat lay, which is exactly what causes an invented pallu or a wrong blouse colour.

Suit sets. Same principle: top, bottom, dupatta and sleeve pieces as their own frames, all in the same light.

Shirts and structured pieces. Fasten buttons, straighten the collar, square the shoulders. Structure that is wrong in the flat lay stays wrong in the render.

Sheer fabrics. Chiffon and georgette are the hardest case. Shooting on a mannequin, where the fabric already has some drape, gives a better reference than a flat lay of a transparent cloth.

Heavy embroidery and zari. Add a close-up with light raking across the surface. Flat frontal light makes metallic thread look like grey cotton.

A repeatable session

Batch it rather than shooting one garment at a time:

  1. Set up once: surface, light, phone position
  2. Lock exposure and white balance against white paper
  3. Steam everything before you start, not one at a time
  4. Shoot each garment in the same position without moving the phone
  5. Add close-ups for anything with texture worth selling
  6. Review at full size before you upload, not on the phone preview

Consistency across the session is what makes the whole catalog look like it belongs together.

What to check before uploading

  • Is the garment flat and crease-free?
  • Is the whole piece in frame with margin?
  • Is the colour right compared with the physical garment in daylight?
  • Is the print repeat undistorted?
  • For multi-part garments, is every part its own photo?

Anything failing that list will fail in the render too, and it is far cheaper to reshoot now than to regenerate repeatedly and wonder why the output looks wrong.

Bottom line

Almost every disappointing AI photoshoot traces back to a source photo that was creased, badly lit, shot at an angle, or missing a part of the garment. None of that needs better equipment. Steam the piece, use window light, shoot square-on, lock white balance, and photograph multi-part garments part by part. That is the whole discipline, and it takes minutes per garment.
